COURSE DESCRIPTION & Outline

With the “soft” outlook for natural gas prices, oil is “King” and Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) is a solution applicable to both mature and recently developed oil reservoirs. This workshop focuses on IOR screening – getting the most from your core analysis and determining if your reservoir is an IOR target – and field application case studies. A variety of IOR approaches are discussed and illustrated with field application case studies.

  • Introduction & Overview, Betty Felber

  • Making The Most of Your Core Analysis, Betty Felber — The information is based on using routine core analysis results to determine reservoir quality index. Dykstra-Parsons and Lorenz coefficient techniques will be reviewed as will a method for determining the permeability cut-off. One capillary pressure technique will also be discussed.

  • Is Your Reservoir A Good IOR Candidate? Betty Felber — The information given is based on SPE papers and internal screening criteria. In this presentation field properties which influence EOR application choices will be reviewed. A summary of these properties will be given for major EOR technologies.

  • Midway Sunset Pru Lease—A Success Story 29 Times Over, Betty Felber — This section reviews the steps taken to re-activate the Pru Lease in Midway-Sunset field. The successful re-activation can be applied to 28 other shut-in leases in the Midway-Sunset field. To date this “idle lease” has produced 4.3 million barrels of oil.

  • New Technology You Might Want To Consider — The technologies covered are microhole, onshore platforms and nanoparticles.

  • California MEOR Applications, Bradley Govreau, Titan Oil Recovery —  Using a breakthrough process, which does not require microbes to be injected, over seventy Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) applications have been conducted since 2007 in producing oil and water injection wells. This presentation will focus on twenty-four California applications and the results of same.

  • What We Found In Lost Hills, Betty Felber — This workshop section summarizes the evaluation, design, and implementation of a Belridge Diatomite CO2 pilot in the Lost Hills Field, Kern County, California. This pilot was unsuccessful however the results and lessons learned may be applicable to evaluate and design other potential San Joaquin Valley CO2 floods.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Engineers, geologists, asset team professionals and managers

LEARN/KNOW AFTER ATTENDING

Attendees will know how to get the most out of their core data, screen their reservoir for applicable IOR processes, determine the most applicable IOR process and, through review of different field application case studies, know industry’s experience with different IOR processes.

PRIMARY INSTRUCTOR
Betty Felber—has over 30 years experience in Improved Oil Recovery Applications. She has worked in research, for operating companies, a service company and the U.S. Government. She has developed chemical systems for enhancing sweep in waterfloods, steamfloods, carbon dioxide and enriched gas floods. She supervised a team of geologists, geophysicists, engineers and chemists that conducted integrated field studies in Europe, Africa, the Middle and Far East and North and South America. At U. S. DOE she was responsible for directing oil upstream, downstream and environmental research, field demonstration projects, technology transfer and managed the National modeling system. She was General Chair for the Improved Oil Recovery Symposium in 1998. In 2008, she was selected as a SPE International Distinguished Member. She holds six United States and two Canadian sweep improvement patents.
